Occupation Continues of University Facilities
Two efforts last week by students to eject protesters and reopen facilities at Michoacán University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo were unsuccessful, meaning that close to 24,000 students will continue to miss classes, reports Mexico News Daily.
Those students have been kept out of their classrooms for over 50 days by a group of would-be students who failed their admission tests and have occupied 20 of the university’s 24 buildings to press their demand to be enrolled in the faculty of education.
The protesting students have had the support of normalistas, who are students at teachers’ colleges, and indigenous community landowners. Both have been behind the hijacking and burning of trucks and buses in Michoacán since June, pressing their own demands for automatic job placement after graduating.
