Ontario's universities are becoming increasingly dependent on revenues from international students, according to new research by CBC. Research shows that the number of international students attending an ON university increased 88.5% between 2010 and 2016, while enrollments from domestic students increased only 7%. The data also show that between the 2011-12 and 2015-16 academic years, total revenue from international student tuition fees rose from $620M to $1.28B.

A research division of Google focused on artificial intelligence announced last week that it will set up its first international research lab in downtown Edmonton in partnership with the University of Alberta. Senior officials at the Department of Homeland Security are floating a proposal that would require foreign students to reapply for permission to stay in the United States every year, a controversial move that would create new costs and paperwork for thousands of visa holders from China, India, and other nations, according to two federal officials with direct knowledge of the discussions. Officials caution that the plan is in the preliminary stages and would require regulatory changes that could take a minimum of 18 months.

"The University of Regina says it is moving toward becoming a smoke-free campus. Starting in September 2017, the university will no longer permit smoking or the use of any tobacco products in any building or vehicles on university land. Further, the school plans to reduce the number of designated outdoor smoking areas from 19 to three located near student residences.

A new agreement between the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and the Brazilian educational institute Lato Sensu Educational Centre (Colegio Lato Sensu) will create new international study opportunities for Brazilian secondary school students. The agreement will see the institutions cooperate in the areas of academic university preparation and pathways, teaching, and collaboration.
